Belle And Sebastian are an enigma. Publicity shy unless on their own terms, they are perhaps best known for their controversial win in the Best New Group category at the Brits. This enraged Pete Waterman, the man behind Steps who accused the group and their fans of vote rigging due to the high number of internet votes cast. The truth is that the internet votes were helped along by the Belle & Sebastian miling lists which helpfully published the url in their posts. And quite right too. What are fan lists for?

Belle & Sebastian first appeared on the album Tigermilk released through a music course on Stowe College, which introduced the magnificent State That I Am In track. This was reprised on the Dog On Wheels EP, a CD that thay have yet to better.

The first widely available CD was this one, a wonderfully understated set that rely heavily on the half sung tones and semi acoustic sound. Tracks like The Stars of Track And Field and Like Dylan In The Movies spring into your head at all times. Sing if you're glad to be fey.
