A Grand Day Out

When you've worked hard all week at school not to mention the job, you deserve a nice day trip. We've done a few recently and here are some of our favourites:-

Dynamic Earth - Holyrood Road Edinburgh.

An attraction like no other. Stunning special effects mixed with good solid facts. Watch out for :- the Iceberg, hidden things in the Rain forest and the queasy feeling you will experience when on the "helicopter ride".
Value for money. The Season ticket and the rocks in the gift shop.

The top of Arthur's Seat - Edinburgh

There are many routes to the top, but we usually favour the easy one which involves parking at Dunsapie Loch and attempting the ascent from there. From the top the views are terrific and it's always very busy on the summit. Take care as the rock is very worn and slippy.
Value for money Feeding the ducks.

Deep Sea World - North Queensferry

We hadn't been for a while so we were pleasantly surprised by the new attractions. They now do a back of house tour which explains their conservation work and hold regular film shows and lectures. New live exhibits on show are piranhas and snakes. (No not in the same tank!) Get your photo taken with a snake. If you think you're hard enough.
Value for money. Squashing a penny to make a souvenir of your visit.

National Museum of the Moving Image - by the NFT London

O.K. so this ones a bit far for a day trip, but it has to be said this journey through the story of cinema and T.V. via animation and early film is fascinating and well presented. Actor guides demonstrate some of the equipment and pull you into their world. You can believe that you are meeting a flapper from the 20's or an usherette from the 50's. At the interactive section read the news with Trevor MacDonald or fly like superman.
Value for money Making a strip for a Zoetrope.

The Scottish Mining Museum - Newtongrange

Really fascinating and not at all "museumey". The staff were really child friendly and many of them are ex miners who worked at the pit. The magic helmet tour is great fun and the coalface gives you a real sense of being down a mine. Look out for the feral cats which live in the museum, they help to keep the pigeons down! Play some old fashioned games like quoits and stilts.
Value for money. Use your NMS Season ticket to get into this attraction and spend what you've saved on inexpensive souvenirs in the gift shop.
