dreich The Souter Family live in a wee town called Portobello on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Although you wouldn't know it now, Portobello was once a bustling seaside resort, with a pier, open air pool and pleasure gardens.

The town was also home to many industries. Glass works, brick works and pottery was all made here.

Many famous people are associated with Portobello. Sir William Russell Flint, the artist, Siren the gladiator and Sir Harry Lauder the music hall entertainer all have connections with the town.

Street Our street leads down to the fine golden sands of the beach. During the summer months the Promenade is still busy with tourists but the visitors are usually just on day trips.

During the winter only the very hardy venture on to the beach, usually only to walk the dog. I remember when I was a kid watching Ned Barnie the cross channel swimmer going for his daily dip. He would go down the alley at the side of the house with his trunks on and a towel round his neck rain, sleet or shine. I'm sure some mornings he broke the ice on the water. You could have set your watch by him.
